The UK healthcare system is heavily reliant on recruiting doctors and nurses from overseas in order to meet the demands for medical care. In 2018-19, over 39,000 UK trained doctors and nurses joined the NHS, but this number was still lower than it had been in 2014-15. In addition, the level of nurses from the European Union joining the NHS has dropped significantly since 2017 due to Brexit, with an outflow of 1,584 more EU nurses leaving their role in the NHS than joining that year.
In order to become a doctor or nurse in the UK, applicants must first complete their respective nursing or medical programme and obtain a bachelor's degree. They must then prepare all relevant documents including pre-employment checks such as DBS, Occupational Health Clearance and reference checks. After successful completion of this process, applicants will attend a training day. On successful completion, nurses can join the UK nursing register, while doctors must pass a skills and knowledge test before they are able to obtain a licence to practise medicine and work in a hospital or other healthcare setting. Furthermore, medical professionals are expected to undertake continuing professional development courses in order to stay up to date with the latest practices and treatments.
The UK government has been working to increase the domestic supply of nurses and doctors by encouraging more people to pursue a career in the medical profession. In addition, attempting to promote integrated care by bringing together NHS organisations and local authorities in sustainability and transformation partnerships. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, there is an increasing demand for medical staff which can only be met by recruiting from abroad. This highlights the importance of ensuring continued access to skilled medical professionals from outside the UK.
